The BBBS team has been hard at work this summer putting together numerous and diverse REACH events! Last month, matches and volunteers helped run the BK5K, kids got active and discovered the challenge of log rolling, and finally had some fun in the sun at our movie night on the beach! It was a great turn out for all the events (the actual number of attendees to the movie night was DOUBLE what we anticipated, sweet!!) The good times just keep on coming this month as we have planned four new activities that allow our matches to be active, be involved, and be happy!
Bluff County Co-op
The first event of the month is Saturday, July 16th at at 10:30am at the Bluff Country Co-op. It is a natural foods cooperative located in Winona, where they provide sustainable organic local products and services to the community and teaches about food going from farm to table and how our food choices can affect our health, our economy, and our environment. At this event, matches can learn how to make healthy meals and snacks, snack on tasty fruit, and explore Winona’s own co-op!
On the River
Not too long after, matches have the opportunity to see the natural wonders of La Crosse as they float down the Mississippi River. Steve and Sue Hildahl have generously offered to host a REACH event on their houseboat. The evening will kick off with light snacks and refreshments followed by a boat ride on the river. Don’t worry, safety is always the number one priority so there will be life jackets provided for all participants! This will take place Tuesday, July 19th (raincheck is Thursday, July 21st) from 5:30-7:30pm.
On Tuesday, July 26th, BBBS is partnering with Bethany Lutheran Homes to have a fun event at Eagle Crest South. Eagle Crest is an assisted living facility located in downtown La Crosse and are always welcoming visitors! There will be a cookout on the patio followed by yard games on their spacious lawn. It’s a great opportunity for our Littles (and Bigs!) to interact with those who are young at heart! This event will take place from 4-6pm. If you and your match would like to partake in this event, please RSVP by July 18th to ensure a spot!
Blue Fruit Farm
Blue Fruit Farm exists as part of the Wiscoy Valley Community Land Cooperative, a 360-acre organically-managed land cooperative. Can you guess how it got its name? The farm covers 5 acres of land with certified organic blueberries, elderberries, aronia berries, black currants, blue plums, honey berries, jostaberries, juneberries, and cherry plums. Matches will be able to tour part of the 5 acre organic berry farm, pick in-season berries, and learn about local, organic sustainable farming! This event will also take place Tuesday, July 26th, from 2-3:30 at Blue Fruit Farm, 31762 Wiscoy Ridge Road, Winona, MN 55987.
There are so many fun and interactive activities to choose from, it’s hard to pick just one! If you and your match are free for any of these events, we HIGHLY encourage you to participate! You can learn more about your community and get to meet other matches as well, how great is that? Contact our La Crosse or Winona offices to sign up or for more information.
