November is National Runaway Prevention Month
National Runaway Prevention Month
Each year, up to 2.8 million youth in the U.S. will run away from home. This is comparable to the population of the 5th largest city in the United States. Our staff at Big Brother Big Sisters of the 7 Rivers Region wants to see an end to this! BBBS is committed to the support and well-being of children in our community, by providing positive relationships and resources youth can rely on when faced with a situation that may lead to running away from home.
November is National Runaway Prevention Month, or NRPM. The National Runaway Safeline (NRS) wants you to join their mission in showing youth in your community that they are not invisible and they are not alone.
The theme of NRPM this year is “Friends Helping Friends.” A friend is a trustworthy person, and is typically someone youth reach out to when faced with a problem. BBBS wants our Bigs to be a trustworthy, friendly face that Littles can open up to when help is needed.
How can you support NRPM this November?
- Wear green! On Wednesday, November 9th, join people throughout the country by supporting NRPM. Or coordinate with your friends or coworkers and plan your own “wear green day”
- Join the Green Light Project: Throughout the month of November, shine a green light on your front porches
- Spread the word on social media: Like NRS on Facebook or follow them on Twitter and use the hashtag #NRPM2016 with all your posts. Don’t forget to tag NRS!
