Activities for Matches to Try This Winter

Well, it’s here. The daunting, freezing, snow covered, never ending season of winter in the Midwest. With the first snowfall, people tend to stay indoors and pretend that the white, bitter coldness outside doesn’t exist, and that’s fine for awhile. At some point, though, you’ve got to muster up the courage to bare the outdoors (even if it’s only to pick up your Little to join you in watching holiday movies). Here are some ideas for matches to do, both inside and outside, this winter.

Go sledding

Find a hill and a sled and make the most of the snow. Whether it’s in your backyard or a local park, sledding makes for a fun filled day. After a day of walking up a hill and screaming as you race to the bottom, hot chocolate has never been more deserved.

Visit the Rotary Lights

One of the rotary-lights-2014_7151-1024x683most holiday-centered activities around is the famous Rotary Lights in Riverside Park, La Crosse. A must see! Bundle up, visit Santa and his reindeer, walk through the pretty lights, and just added this year, go ice skating! The Rotary Lights are free of charge with a requested donation of nonperishable food items to be donated to people in the community this holiday season.

Try ice skating

What better way to cope with winter than skate on the ice it provides? Like I said before, this is a new addition to Riverside Park this year, but there are plenty of skating rinks around both La Crosse and Winona to take advantage of. Grab your skates and your match and show your skills on the ice.

Make holiday crafts and snacks

When it’s too cold to venture outside, take things indoors with a craft and baking day.

Here are some ideas:snowman

Ornaments and holiday decor

Paper plate holiday crafts

Adorable sock snowman

(hint: family LOVES homemade gifts!)

Snacks- cookies

Lump of coal Rice Krispie treats

Classic sugar cookie cut out cookies

Easy and delicious pretzel hugs

Adventure with snowshoes

Take a day to explore the many trails of the area by snowshoe! Snowshoes can be rented from both Winona State University and UW- La Crosse for a low cost. Don’t forget your hat and mittens, and for the less coordinated, snow pants!

Watch movies

If you’re interested in warm and relaxed winter activity, grab some popcorn and a holiday flick. I recommend Elf; that movie just never get’s old.

Don’t let the cold keep you from hanging out with your match! Keep us updated on what you and your Little do together this winter, and keep your eye out for winter REACH activities. Happy holidays!
